It's message is based on an attitude of 'Post-Despair
Optimism'. That is, you realise that things really are as
bad as you thought they were, but you chip away anyway,
undaunted. It's written for anyone who feels overwhelmed
by the madness of the modern world and thinks it's up to
them to put it all right, and doesn't feel up to the
task. The concept 'Licensed To Shop" came from a realisation that in a modern city we can become so far removed from 'the real world' that the nearest thing we get to reaality is the performing of a financial transaction. It's as though by transacting we affirm that we are alive. The credit card or bank card is like a licence to shop. |
