Song Information - Spiral Of Change

This is another song which was written whilst scarecrowing at a vineyard near Kyneton in Victoria. While I was in the vineyard I read a book by Starhawk, called Spiral Dance. I had come across this title many years earlier as being one of the background sources for Charlie Murphy's song 'The Burning Times', which was made popular by Roy Bailey. The idea expressed in the phrase "All love, all life is one", is based on the line "All life is sacred, all life is one." in Leon Rosselson's song , "Who Reaps The Profit? Who Pays The Price?" which I also heard Roy Bailey sing. From those two sources emerged the concept of "an endless cycle, a spiral of change."

Meanwhile I was looking for an outlet for my pet cosmic theory, developed during the 1980's, and affectionately referred to as 'steady bang'. ( ie the universe as we observe it is expanding, yet nothing is ultimately created or destroyed, as the expansion which we perceive is part of an infinitely recursive cycle of expansion and contraction).

Parts of Kavisha Mazzella's song 'Invisible Indivisible' seemed to be describing a broadly similar cosmology, which led me to think it wasn't so wacky after all.

Then came a trip to Tamworth for the annual country music festival. I was talking to a stallholder at the market, when I felt drawn to a waistcoat, tried it on and bought it. I noticed the name on the label was 'Shiva and Shakti'. The name struck a chord. A few weeks earlier I had been reading the introduction to a book about tantric sex, which gave a simplistic introduction to hindu cosmology, in which the universe is described as an eternal dance between the polarities of matter and energy, heaven and earth, male and female, as represented by Shiva and Shakti.

So really it's a song about spiritual, emotional and physical reconciliation.
