Song Information - More, More, More

I used to be very interested in conspiracy theories as they seemed to offer some kind of explanation for what was happening in the world. In 1990 I did a short course in Global Politics with the Open University in Britain. At the time globalisation was a fairly new concept, defined as having two dimensions: on the one hand it meant having world-wide reach; on the other it meant the capacity to exert power at all levels - global, national, local, individual, biological.

In 1991 I met a man in Thailand who had a conspiracy theory to beat them all. In essence he believed that there was a global conspiracy involving the leaders of every major organisation in the world. This included, politicians, industrialists, religious leaders, freemasons. He believed the conspiracy had been happening for over a hundred years, with the purpose of bringing about a single world government.

Included in the plot were plans for a number of world wars, the 'playing off' off capitalist and communist blocs, a number of global recessions, etc etc. It was quite a dark picture. All independent cultures would be absorbed to create a single dependent global culture. There would then be a catastrophe which would cause panic in which people would accept a totalitarian global government. Each day he would pick up the paper and show how the world events of the day fitted into his belief system. It was fascinating to see how we can create the reality we believe in, for good or bad, by the way we interpret the information we receive.

This song explores the preoccupation with growth, or 'more-ism', and the pursuit of power or riches at the expense of life. The worried man was the man in I met in Thailand, and, for a while, was me.
