For about 6 months in 1995 I lived at Crystal Waters, an eco-village
intentionally designed using permaculture
principles. Just before I moved out I heard the call of a
whipbird, in the trees just next to the house. I'd heard
the call before many times, but never so close. I'd been
told that the full call was actually made by two
whipbirds, though they are often indistinguishable. The
first call, which has the characteristic whip sound, is
made by the male. The two-tone response is made by the
female. To hear the actual call of the whipbird, check out http://avoca.vicnet.net.au/~birdsaus/calls/whipbird.mp3 |
